I do not find that hearing of your opponents' buttons is considered cheating. Whatever you do and hear, as long as you are not disrupting or interfering your opponent, I dont find it cheating. Cheating such as (pushing his hands away, pressing his buttons while you do ultra, asking the person take cab go back etc..)

Reminds me of an article on Sirlin, where a Zangief in HDR won the tournament not only because he was good, but because Zangief has good matchups against most of the top tier. So in the metagame, Zangief is actually better in a tournament because of that.

http://www.sirlin.net/blog/2010/7/12/evolution-2010-the-miracle-man-with-zangief.html

Just like how Diago lost to a Rose, because he was unfamiliar with the matchup - strictly, Rose is prolly mid-low tier, but due to the tournament metagame, she has an edge.

How to get Singaporeans to play not-so-top tiers? Not possible, we're all too cheap. XD

The best thing we can do on the 'hearing buttons problem' is to place the machines back to back in tournaments.  It won't work for normal arcade play as there will just be another machine next to you and you could be playing against him.

I have run into many players who use 'hearing' to win against me and if I really lost cos of it, it really makes me hot sometimes especially if the opponent is Zangief or Sagat.  If you run into this kind of players, just mash especially loud during their block strings or on wakeup and stop slightly earlier when you sense a reversal coming.  Then turn around and smile at them.  Or you can consult Xian on how to play and mash SF4 without sound.  He is quite good at it.

I don't like to play with the person next to me to avoid this problem.  It's already tiring enough to play mind games in the game.  But these people forces you to play mind games outside the game.
